Smart Building Software
How we can help
At Abtec, we don’t just deploy and maintain building management systems, we develop applications too. Our in-house development team has created new applications and extended the capabilities of market-leading building management systems.
The team creates bespoke software and applications for building users and contractors. Our development team’s work aims to share the benefits of building automation to facilities managers, contractors and building users. We want to encourage as wide an audience as possible can use building systems so that building owners get more return from their building management investment. A fantastic example of this is our Hydra platform.
What is Hydra?
We built this system based on years of feedback from facilities managers, building owners and landlords. Getting more for less could be the mantra of all facilities managers and landlords.
To reach that goal, many have invested in building management systems, aiming to cut energy and operational costs. However, some have ended up with discrete systems that don’t work well together and don’t deliver their objectives. This is where our integrated building energy management systems platform, Hydra, can help.
Power at Your Fingertips
The Hydra system, with its supervisor control and data acquisition functions, is a window into the heart of a building. It is also a proactive business tool giving information to building managers so they can make informed business decisions. Delivering an energy efficient building that produces a comfortable work-space environment for the well-being of the building’s occupants.
Hydra is a flexible building management platform that intelligently simplifies tasks and processes. Hydra allows you to complete building control and safety tasks in a fast secure and comfortable manner. Hydra provides a powerful capability to incorporate your organisation’s roles and responsibilities into the system. Each operator, and user, will see act and react only to their specific and predefined area of responsibility and scope of operation.
Ease of Use
Hydra allows users to easily navigate the system to visualise logged events. Built on the latest vector graphics platform, it helps users zoom in to the information they need, whether that’s on a PC, laptop, tablet, or smartphone.
Hydra makes reporting easy. The powerful reporting engine includes a wide range of standard reports and lets you customise reports that can be tailored with real-time charts graphs and other relevant images and pictures. Automatically creating, and running reports based on a present schedule, or events trigger the platform allows users to create report templates that can be modified for future use.
Hydra is designed to work with your IT infrastructure using the latest Tridium Niagara Framework technology, and standard databases. Its client-server architecture supports desktop, Windows app and web clients, offering the same user interface, along with the functionality you expect from today’s computing technology.

Extending BMS Capabilities
As well as developing our own platform, we’ve also extended the reach and capability of marketing leading building controls applications and systems.
We’re an accredited Triduim developer, and specialise in working with contractors that need to integrate their services into an overarching building management system. For example, we’ve developed Tridium Niagara plugin and drivers to link door and window access to HVAC systems.
Project Haystack
We also have a great understanding of the benefits of Project Haystack, which is an open-source initiative aimed at standardising the way data is modelled and represented in building management systems.
The goal of the project is to make it easier for BMS vendors, system integrators, and building owners to exchange data and integrate disparate systems, ultimately leading to more efficient and sustainable buildings.
We’ve been developing using the Haystack platform for several years, and we find it’s helping to streamline the management and optimisation of buildings, leading to increased energy efficiency, lower costs, and improved occupant comfort and safety.
API Development and Integration
Our development team has created Application Programming Interfaces (API) for many leading building controls systems. We’ve recently extended the capabilities of Signify, which includes the Philips lighting brand.
Our development team can help building owners, facilities managers, contractors, and end users get more from their building systems and controls. In fact, if you have an application or system that needs to talk to another building controller application, it would be worth giving us a ring on 01858 438 550, to see if we can help.
